Wolmer’s, Calabar in Manning Cup feature
WOLMER’S Boys will square off against Calabar High in the feature game of a Group H double- header when the second round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports’ Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup kicks off today at Constant Spring playing field.
The game is scheduled to get under way at 3:00pm, while many-time champions St George’s College will go up against Haile Selassie High in the early fixture set for 1:00 pm.
It should be a humdinger as both teams have displayed good attacking and defensive ability. Wolmer’s Boys finished atop Group E on 22 points having won seven of their eight fixtures, while drawing the other. They amassed 27 goals with only one against them.
The Heroes’ Circle-based outfit will be brimming with confidence following their recent come from behind 3-1 win over daCosta Cup outfit St James High in the LIME Super Cup knockout competition, and if not treading on weary legs, the likes of Khori Bennett, Demar Rose and Jaheel Hyde should cause some problems for their opponents.
However, Calabar will be well rested coming into the encounter, and despite the absence of a few key players to national Under-17 duties, they should prove formidable opponents. The Red Hills Road-based boys did well to claim the runner-up spot in Group F on 22 points with seven wins, two losses and one draw with a tally of 22 goals and six against.
Meanwhile, the curtain-raiser is expected to be a stroll for the North Street-based St George’s College who eased past Godfrey Stewart 5-1 in the knockout competition over the weekend. The prolific Amoy Brown, Shevon Stewart and Gregory Messam Jr should get the job done for the Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell-coached outfit against a young Haile Selassie team who are making it to this stage of the competition for the very first time in the school’s history.
