JC complete urban area dominance with 2-1 win over CC
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending Manning Cup champions Jamaica College (JC) fought valiantly to secure a 2-1 come-from-behind win over a plucky Cornwall College in an enthralling LIME Super Cup knockout football match at Catherine Hall Sports Complex, Saturday night.
The red-and-gold clad Cornwall College boys must still be cursing their luck after they were denied by the brilliance of JC’s goalkeeper Courtney Dowdie, who stopped Akeem McCarthy’s penalty kick on the stroke of half-time.
But, enjoying a massive support from scores of vuvuzela-blowing and wild-screaming fans, the many-time daCosta Cup champions rallied and pounced into the lead through a goal from Demaro Fowler in the 55th minute of play.
The goal pushed the wind in the sail of the Dr Dean Wheatherly-coached lads who threatened to double their lead with consistent raids on the Kingston team.
Another goal was expected by the home fans, who repeatedly chanted CC! CC!, but that was not to be, as the limping JC custodian repeatedly rose to the big occasion for his team. He twice prevented the goal poacher Alrick Ottey from what seemed certain goals.
However, JC wiped the smile off the faces of the Montegonians and gave the Kingston team and their fans the last laugh.
Rafique Bryan drew his team level in the 63rd minute to set up a mouth-watering end-to-end battle.
The Miguel Coley-conditioned boys surged ahead in the 87th minute when Sheldon McKoy’s looping header from a cross by substitute Donovan Segree beat the Cornwall College goalkeeper Leonardo Friginette all ends up.
JC were the third urban-based school to progress to the next round of the knockout competition following the Montego Bay triple-header.
During the first game Camperdown High shot past Dinthill High 3-0, after which Wolmer’s Boys’ beat St James High 3-1.
