Wolmer’s fight back to beat St James High 3-1
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Wolmer’s Boys advanced to the next round of the LIME Super Cup Knockout competition with a hard-fought come-from-behind 3-1 win over St James High at a jam-packed Catherine Hall Sports Complex last evening.
After playing to a 1-1 stalemate in full-time, Jaheel Hyde broke the deadlock by capitalising on a mix-up in the St James High defence, early in the first half of extra time.
The Manning Cup contenders increased their lead again early in the second half of extra time when Joshaun McNaught finished a cross from Hyde.
Meanwhile, Wolmer’s ended the game with 10 players as Rajea Tomlin was ejected after receiving a second yellow card in the dying moments.
Earlier, hundreds of Montegonian fans erupted into wild cheers after the home team shot into the lead with a goal from striker Romario Clarke in the 33rd minute.
Wolmer’s was called upon to defend stoutly as St James’ wily Radcliffe Dawkins went on the attack with mesmerising touches, much to the delight of the fans.

The skilful player dribbled away down the left hand side of the field, leaving defenders beaten in his wake. But the tide changed after the break and the Wolmer’s, which came out in the second half looking more purposeful, eventually managed to draw level in the 49th minute with Shaquille McKoy’s well-placed header.
Wolmer’s came close to gaining the lead when Hyde’s left- footed pile driver careened off the inside of the crossbar and landed back into play. But the Kingston team rallied their troops in extra time and pulled off the win.
Winning coach Ludlow Bernard praised his payers for digging deep to come up with the win.
Losing coach Theodore Whitmore was gracious in defeat. “We made some silly mistakes and Wolmer’s made us pay for it. But I think the boys gave their all this (yesterday) afternoon,” Whitmore said.
In the first game, another Manning Cup team, Camperdown High, also advanced after beating Dinthill High 3-0.
The East Kingston team took the lead in the 15th minute when Tevin Shaw rose above the St Catherine team’s defenders and nodded past George Brown in goal. Three minutes later, the lead was doubled after Ramiesh McKnight got onto the end of an Ajuma Johnson cross, which also originated from a play down the right flank.
Kevin Clarke rounded off the scoring three minutes after the break.
In the late kick-off, Jamaica College edged Cornwall College 2-1.
