STETHS spank Denham Town 5-0
St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) eased into the quarter-final round after blanking Denham Town High 5-0 in yesterday’s ISSA/LIME Super Cup match at the National Stadium in Kingston.
The opening three goals from STETHS came from a dead-ball situation in the lopsided second game of the triple-header at the Stadium.
Attacker Donjay Smith scored twice — the first coming from the penalty spot in the eighth minute and the second via a 40th-minute deflected free kick.
Defender Rushane McClymont notched a sweetly hit free kick of his own in the 78th before substitutes Jovoney Brown and Romario Allen scored in minutes 87 and 89, respectively.
STETHS head coach Omar Wedderburn described the victory as ” a lovely performance” from his players.
Denham Town coach Earl Bennett said his team was beaten, not necessarily by better players, but by a fitter team.
“The STETHS team was stronger and fitter than us. It’s not that their players were better,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
St Elizabeth Technical, the daCosta Cup title-holders, were handed an early opportunity when Smith was tripped inside the box. He stepped up to score the resultant penalty kick with aplomb.
As the game approached half-time, Smith struck again.
Seconds after receiving a caution in the midst of an argument with the referee, he smashed home a free kick, which cannoned off a defender’s head to be cruelly deflected away from Denham Town goalkeeper Saniyo Salkie.
A booming free-kick from McClymont, approximately 28 yards out, made it 3-0 with 12 minutes to go.
The late goals followed as Brown and Allen completed the demolition against a drained and disorganised-looking Denham Town.
Hydel sink Old Harbour 1-0
Stephen Barnett struck in the 46th minute to send Hydel High into the quarter-finals of the ISSA/LIME Super Cup with a 1-0 win over plucky Old Harbour High at the National Stadium yesterday.
Hydel proved the stronger team over the course of the 90 minutes, but Old Harbour got a few half-chances late on.
In the end, it was Barnett’s goal in the first minute of the second half which proved the difference-maker.
Hydel coach Donovan Hayles was relieved with the victory, but said the energy-sapping 1-2 loss to Jamaica College days ago in the Walker Cup Knock-out left his players in less than ideal condition.
“I didn’t like our approach today against Old Harbour, but I know we had a hard game against JC in the Walker Cup. I’m happy with the win and the further you go in a competition is the better the team feels,” he told reporters.
Uriel Meghie, the Old Harbour coach, praised his team’s showing against a more seasoned Hydel side.
“It was a quality performance from Old Harbour today. We got some late chances too, but they are youngsters and they’ll learn from it,” Meghie said.
