Tough Super Cup first round Saturday
MONTEGO BAY, St James – WESTERN Jamaica’s three representatives in the inaugural Lime Super Cup all drew tough oppositions for this Saturday’s first round of matches that will feature triple-headers at the Montego Bay Sports Complex and the national stadium.
Cornwall College, Godfrey Stewart and St James High, all former daCosta Cup champions are among the eight teams from the ISSA/Lime daCosta Cup competition that will play against the top eight teams from the Corporate Area Manning Cup competition in a knockout competition that will offer the winners a total of $1 million.
Cornwall College will play all-island champions Jamaica College in the third game of a triple-header at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday after St James High and Wolmer’s Boys play in the 4:00pm game.
Godfrey Stewart will meet St George’s College at the national stadium in the 6:00pm game. Meanwhile another three western teams also advanced to the quarter-final stages of the daCosta Cup competition after being the runners-up in their groups, Petersfield High, Frome Technical and Cedric Titus.
St James High which qualified for the Inter-zone round as one of the best thirdplaced teams, is the only team with a perfect win record in the Inter-zone round.
The Theodore Whitmore coached team beat Vere Technical, Glenmuir High and Morant Bay High in Zone 7. Cornwall College topped Zone 1 with five points, beating Petersfield High 2-0 while drawing 0-0 with Muschett High and Rusea’s High.
Petersfield took second place with four points, beating Rusea’s and drawing with Muschett.
They advanced to the quarter-finals after missing last season. Muschett High bowed out of the competition without losing a game, winning all their games on the first round before drawing all three Interzone round games by 0-0 score lines.
Godfrey Stewart topped Zone 2 with six points from two wins, hammering William Knibb 6-1 and beating Green Pond 3-0 after losing to Frome Technical.
Frome took the runner-up spot in Zone 2 and will play in the quarter-finals. Cedric Titus who needed to beat Old Harbour to get into the Lime Cup competition, could only manage a 0-0 draw and will have to settle for a quarter-final spot.
