HOSTS Boys’ Town FC and Portmore United will vie for a place in the semi-final of the Flow Champions Cup Knockout competition when they square off at the Collie Smith Complex today, starting at 3:00 pm.
Fans can expect a humdinger in this quarter-final encounter. The clubs are two of the more storied in Jamaica’s history. Though Portmore United were relegated from the nation’s top football division at the end of last season, the two teams have combined for eight league titles since 1973-4.
Rivalry aside, the pair, like all other contenders, will be keen on the 2014 Flow Cup top prize of $1.5 million and the winning trophy.
Boys’ Town reached the last eight with a penalty shoot-out win over Lucea FC after the teams were locked 0-0 at the end of normal and extra time. The Boys’ Town team then blanked fellow Trench Town-based opponents Arnett Gardens FC 2-0 in the second round.
Portmore were also unconvincing in their opening round encounter, getting by Old Harbour Bay United in a penalty shoot-out after the teams played to a 2-2 draw. A 2-0 defeat of top flight newcomers Barbican FC followed as Portmore United grew in confidence.
In another game, Highgate United welcome Harbour View FC to the St Mary Sports Complex at 3 pm.
Also at 3:00 pm, Sporting Central Academy host Reno at Juici Park in Clarendon.
Yesterday’s scheduled clash between Montego Bay United and Tivoli Garden FC at WesPow Park was postponed because the latter has players out with suspected cases of the mosquito-transmitted chikungunya virus.
A new date has not yet been announced.
The Flow Champions Cup features the 12 Premier League teams in addition to the 14 parish or confederation winners.
The top six Premier League teams at the end of the 2013 calendar year received byes in Round One and joined the competition at the second stage.
The final of the 2014 Flow Cup KO is set for November 17.
