Seven D’Cup teams book spots to LIME Super Cup
MONTEGO BAY, St James — There were little surprises as seven of the eight teams that will represent the rural area in the first ISSA/LIME Super Cup competition were decided as the Inter-zone round came to an end.
Fourteen of the 16 quarter-finalists have also been decided after the crucial Zone Eight game between Garvey Maceo and Kemps Hill was blown off with just under five minutes to go with the scores tied at 1-1.
Six former daCosta Cup champions as well as Old Harbour High, one of the two best third-placed teams, will enter this morning’s draw to face the Manning Cup teams when the first round gets underway this weekend.
Cornwall College, Godfrey Stewart, STETHS, Clarendon College, Old Harbour, Dinthill Tech and St James High won their Inter-zone groups and qualified for the cash-rich Super Cup that offers the winners $1 million.
Meanwhile, seven other teams also advanced to the quarter-finals after placing second in their zones. They are Petersfield High, Frome Technical, Manchester High, Lacovia High, Cedric Titus, Marcus Garvey and Glenmuir High.
One team, 2008 daCosta Cup champions St James High, the other best third-placed team, had a perfect win record in the Inter-zone round after edging Morant Bay High 1-0 to finish on nine points in Zone Seven.
The other six teams that had won their first two games, all played to draws yesterday, including St Elizabeth Technical and Manchester High in their big match-up in Santa Cruz.
STETHS defender Rushane McClymonth scored both goals, giving up an 18th-minute own goal, but redeemed himself with a 90th-minute header as they advanced ahead of Manchester High on goal difference.
Clarendon College finished goalless against Lacovia in Zone Four, while Old Harbour High got the nod over Cedric Titus after their 0-0 draw in Zone Five.
Cornwall College won Zone One with five points after playing to a 0-0 draw with Rusea’s High, who finished with 10 players as Petersfield placed second after their contentious 0-0 draw with Muschett High in the first game of the rain-affected double-header at Jarrett Park.
Michael Kerr scored all three goals as Godfrey Stewart blanked Green Pond High to win Zone Two, while Frome Technical got the runner-up spot after drawing 0-0 with William Knibb, edging Green Pond on goal-difference as both ended on four points.
Dinthill Technical beat Titchfield 3-1 to top Zone Six with seven points as Rujae Jackson, Rodane Murray and Necoa Francis all scored as Marcus Garvey beat Oracabessa High 1-0 to take second place.
Sheldon Neil scored twice for Ewarton in their 2-1 win over Paul Bogle High, while Adrian Simms scored a hat-trick for Brimmervale in their come-from-behind 3-2 win over Fair Prospect.
