Wolmer’s Boys’s crash out of Walker Cup
THERE will be a new champion of the 2014 edition of the ISSA/LIME Walker Cup after defending Champions Wolmer’s Boys suffered a 2-1 defeat to Charlie Smith High on Saturday evening.
Charlie Smith are gaining revenge on the maroon and gold team after losing to them in the semi-finals of this competition.
The game began as a tense, tactical affair with very few clear opportunities being given to either team. However, the game sprung to life in the 40th minute when Joel Pagan struck a magnificent long-range volley to put Wolmer’s ahead.
Wolmer’s would not enter the half with the lead as Odane Samuels levelled for Charlie with a free kick in the 45th minute. It was then back-to-back goals for Charlie Smith who took the lead in the 46th minute through in-form striker Bebeto McDonald. The second half was again one of few chances for either team, but it was Charlie Smith who managed to come out on top.
Saturday’s earlier Walker Cup game saw St George’s College dispatch Camperdown High 4-2.
St George’s College (StGC) deservedly took the lead in the 16th minute when Amoy Brown tucked away a lovely pass to him. Shevon Stewart then got into the action with a solo run to put George’s 2-0 up.
Camperdown were not down and out, however, and they netted a goal from a header by Kevin Clarke. The first half was wrapped up when Stewart again made a solo run to restore StGC’s two-goal lead. The second half was a story of two late penalties as Camperdown got one in the 90th minute. It was dispatched coolly by Rameesh McKnight, but it was STGC who got the last call with Gregory Messam scoring from the spot with the last kick of the game.
Friday also saw Walker Cup action with Manning Cup winners Jamaica College thrashing Holy Trinity 4-0. Renaldo Brown got the first goal for the dark blues after some early resistance from Trinity. After this, the floodgates were open and captain Junior Flemming netted the next goal to end the half.
Flemming again scored after being the first to react to a loose ball. Raffique Bryan wrapped up JC’s dominant display with a powerful, left-footed drive in the 90th minute.
Hydel High booked their places in the semi-finals of the Walker Cup after a convincing 2-1 victory over Denham Town. Stephen Barnett poached the opening goal after reacting first to a mishandled save from the ‘keeper. They would not score again until the 54th minute when Nicholas Nelson poked in an effort after another mishandling from the Denham Town goalkeeper.
Howard Williams’ consolation goal was the finest in the match. He fired a vicious shot into the top corner, past the Hydel goalkeeper.
Semi-final 1 will now see JC face Hydel, and semi-final 2 will see STGC vs Charlie Smith. Both matches will be played tomorrow.
