JC begin quest to lift Walker Cup
ALL-ISLAND champions Jamaica College (JC) will embark on a mission to win the only trophy that eluded them last season when they tackle Holy Trinity High in the ISSA/LIME Walker Cup knockout at the Constant Spring field at 3:00 pm today.
In the curtain-raiser at 1:00 pm, Denham Town High play Hydel High.
JC, who won the Manning Cup and easily dispatched daCosta Cup champions STETHS in the All-Island Olivier Shield trophy, will want to add the Walker Cup to what could be a historic four-trophy season with the addition of the LIME Super Cup.
JC with their head coach Miguel Coley, off to Japan on national duties with the Reggae Boyz, will be led by assistant coach Delroy Brown, and he envisages no problems for the title favourites.
“We are prepared for this match and it doesn’t matter who we play. It’s crunch time now, we are going to bring our ‘A’ game,” said a confident Brown.
He continued: “During the early rounds we rotated players a lot so for this match we will be coming with a strong team and regardless of the opposition I expect a positive result.”
With a strike force of former National Under-17 captain Junior Flemming, Rolando Brown, Raffique Bryan and Akean Shackleford, JC will be hard to deny.
“It’s not the first time Holy Trinity is reaching this stage, I don’t know much about them, but the overall strength of our team should give us a comfortable win. We have the most potent attack in schoolboy football right now,” Brown declared.
Meanwhile, Holy Trinity’s physiotherapist Patrick Holness has pointed out that his team will be without five players, including the goalkeeper because of the chikungunya virus, but expects a good showing nevertheless.
“We are just going to take this game like another game, all respect to JC. We are going to play some football and there is no pressure on Holy Trinity right now. We were at this stage last year, so it’s not new to the guys,” said Holness.
Meanwhile, the clash between Denham Town and Hydel will be a very interesting one and can go either way.
Hydel’s head coach Donovan Hayles is confident of his team advancing to the semi-finals, but admits it will be difficult without five players, three out with the chikungunya virus and two through injury.
“I don’t know much about Denham Town, but this is a quarter-final and definitely it is going to be a tough game. The further you go is the tougher it is going to get,” Hayles said.
“We are coming out of a very tough zone, so I think the players are used to that high competitive game and being a knockout, we are prepared for all eventualities,” he added.
Denham Town, who won Group C, but lost their last game to Innswood High, can be a dangerous team and cannot be taken lightly.
Head coach Errol Bennett believes their underdog status will serve the team from West Kingston well. “Basically, it will help my team because they know they are underdogs and feel they have something to prove.
“It will be a very competitive match because there is a rivalry between Hydel and Denham Town and we are looking forward to a good game,” Bennett added.
