STETHS hammer Holmwood 5-1 as Inter-zone begins
KIRKVINE, Manchester — Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and five other former champions scored important wins yesterday as the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition get under way.
STETHS had the biggest margin of win yesterday beating Holmwood Technical 5-1 in a Zone 3 game at Kirkvine Sports Club to share the lead with Manchester High, who were 2-0 winners over Edwin Allen High.
Glenmuir High, St James High, Garvey Maceo High, Clarendon College and Frome Technical were also winners.
Cornwall College and Muschett High dropped their first points of the season after playing out a 0-0 draw in their Zone 1 game at Jarrett Park.
At Kirkvine, Donjay Smith and Shawn Genus both scored two goals and Jovoney Brown scored the other for STETHS in their big win as they assumed the lead on goal difference.
Isamnia Cohan got both goals for Manchester High as they blanked Edwin Allen in the first game of a double-header at Juici Field in Clarendon.
St James High and Glenmuir set up a potentially winner-takes-all-clash in Zone 7 on Saturday after scoring wins yesterday.
St James High, one of two best third-placed teams, blanked Vere Technical 3-0 at St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex, while Glenmuir scored a 2-0 win over Morant Bay High at Lyssons Field in St Thomas.
Garvey Maceo High, last season’s beaten finalists, are the leaders in Zone 8 after edging Paul Bogle High 2-1.
Clarendon College are on top of Zone 4 after edging Mile Gully 1-0, while Frome Technical beat Godfrey Stewart High by the same scoreline at Frome Sports Grounds to assume the lead in Zone 2.
Old Harbour High, the other team to get into the Inter-zone through the best third-placed route, were also winners, beating Fair Prospect 2-0 to share the lead in Zone 5 with Cedric Titus, who beat Brimmervale High 2-1 at Drax Hall.
Petersfield scored a moral-boosting 1-0 win over former champions Rusea’s at Frome to lead Zone 1 ahead of Cornwall College and Muschett High.
Meanwhile, Inter-zone newcomers Ewarton High and Oracabessa High both drew their games 1-1.
Oracabessa came from a goal down to earn a draw against Titchfield High, who were given the lead in the 54th minute from the penalty spot by Joel Green-Burke.
Jahvia Lloyd, however, equalised in the 63rd minute for Oracabessa.
