Holy Trinity join group winners in LIME Super Cup
In perhaps the most competitive first round witnessed, eight teams have managed to book their spots in both the LIME Super Cup and the traditional Walker Cup knockout competitions.
St George’s College, Charlie Smith, Denham Town, Camperdown, Wolmer’s Boys, Hydel and Jamaica College have all won their groups and qualified for the highly anticipated knockout competition, while Holy Trinity selected themselves as the best second-placed team and will accompany the group winners.
Groups A, D and G were easily decided with the perennial powerhouses St George’s College and Jamaica College taking Groups A and G, respectively. Of note is that both schools have dominated the Manning Cup over the last decade, sharing seven titles between them. Jamaica College were the only team with a win percentage of 100, scoring 31 goals and conceding once in eight games, while St George’s College lost their final game as coach Neville Bell made strategic changes to his team.
The other team which qualified with relative ease was Camperdown. The East Kingston team last won the Manning Cup in 1982, although their last title would be the Walker Cup KO in 1988. They have a .900 win percentage. Wolmer’s Boys have been very strong as well with a winning percentage of .938, scoring 27 goals and conceding once.
Holy Trinity managed to select themselves as the best second-placed team, winning six of eight games in Group E, while drawing two.
The rural qualifiers for the LIME Super Cup are yet to be decided. Their final stage of qualification starts with the Inter-zone round which began yesterday. The eight winners will join the urban winners in the draw next Wednesday.
The LIME Super Cup gets underway on October 18 at four top venues across the island.
