daCosta Cup Inter-zone round kicks off today
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The clash between unbeaten teams Cornwall College and Muschett High in the second game of a double header at Jarrett Park will highlight today’s start of the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition.
Sixteen games are down to be played today and the top two schools from each will advance to the next round, while the winners of the eight Inter-zone rounds will qualify for the new ISSA/LIME Super Cup competition.
Also of interest today, Godfrey Stewart will meet Frome Technical, Edwin Allen will test Manchester High, while defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) will face Holmwood Technical at Kirkvine.
At Jarrett Park, Cornwall College and Muschett High are the only teams remaining in the competition with perfect win records, and at least one will have their win streak broken today in the first meeting of the teams at the Inter-zone round.
Cornwall College won all eight games in Zone A, while Muschett won all six games in Zone C, both with sterling records.
Cornwall College allowed just two goals while scoring 33, while Muschett scored 11 while conceding just one, and were the first school to qualify for the Inter-zone round.
Both schools will be without top players today, however, with Peter-Lee Vassell and Venton Evans away with the national Under-17 team, while Muschett’s Charles Grant will also be away with the national team.
Cornwall College will still have top scorers Jourdaine Fletcher, Alrick Ottey and Ackeem McCarthy in their line-up today.
Muschett High last beat Cornwall College in the 2010 season when both teams played in Zone A, but Cornwall College beat them twice in the 2011 season.
In the first game of the double-header, Green Pond High will be seeking their first Inter-zone win when they take on William Knibb Memorial, after losing all three last year when they qualified for the first time.
Kaschief Brown, the leading scorer in the first round with 11 goals, will lead the Green Pond team that should also include Ramone Sibley and Omar Clarke.
Westmoreland neighbours Godfrey Stewart, Zone D winners, and Frome Technical, Zone B winners, will meet at the Frome Sports grounds in what should be a close game. Godfrey Stewart completed their schedule on Monday by playing the second half of their interrupted game against Manning’s School in Sav-la-Mar but should be ready to face Frome.
Frome dominated Zone C, winning their first five games before drawing 0-0 against Rusea’s High on Saturday, a game that the latter needed to get a result from in order to advance.
Edwin Allen are one of the dark horses of the competition and will face Manchester High in the first game of a double-header at Juici Field. Both will be in a tight race for the second qualifying spot in the group that includes defending champions STETHS.
STETHS should start with a win against a Holmwood Technical team that is still mourning the loss of a teammate who died last week.
Clarendon College are coming off a loss to Lennon High in a meaningless game that spoiled their perfect win record, but should bounce back against Mile Gully High in the second game at Juici Field.
Ewarton High will make their first appearance in the Inter-zone round and will travel to Jamalco to face Kemps Hill in a clash of surprise first-round winners.
Ewarton won Zone K ahead of Dinthill Technical, while Kemps Hill, who are advancing past the first round for only the second time, topped Zone N ahead of Vere Technical.
