Charlie, Wolmer’s run riot
CHARLIE Smith rattled Vauxhall 7-0 at the Anthony Spaulding Sport Complex yesterday to remain the only unbeaten team in Group F entering the second round of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition.
Odane Samuels continued to prove his worth as leader of Charlie Smith by scoring three of his team’s goals on his 16th birthday. Samuels opened the scoring in the 13th minute from the penalty spot. He then logged his other two goals in the 40th and 62nd minutes, while vacating his customary defensive position.
Kurt Hibbert scored a double with goals in the 26th and 79th minutes, while Kimani Arbourne in the 35th, and second-half substitute Anthony Scott in the 72nd completed the deluge.
Charlie Smith, who have already booked their spot in the second round and will also contest the Walker Cup and LIME Super Cup, moved their tally to 20 points after completing round one in which they scored 30 goals and conceded only three.
“It is a good feeling to complete the round without being defeated, but the real test of our resolve lies ahead. We cannot just sit back and think it’s over. We will have to go back to the drawing board and plan afresh for the next round and beyond,” coach Jerome Waite explained.
His Vauxhall counterpart Keon Broderick rued the poor performance of his team, as it is being affected badly by the chikungunya virus.
In the opening game of the evening’s double header, Wolmer’s humbled Trench Town 4-0 with Khori Bennett scoring a hat-trick and the fourth coming from the boot of Jamele Hall.
