Charlie Smith get a glimpse of LIME Super Cup
THE central Kingston-based Charlie Smith High School compound was abuzz with activity and excitement last week as they played host to the LIME Super Cup trophy and accompanying LIME officials.
Having remained unbeaten this season, the brown and yellow clad footballers are eagerly gunning for contention in the inaugural LIME Super Cup with the beautiful crystal trophy as their ultimate prize.
“It is our intent to go one step further and win all the cups available. We would want to win the Manning Cup, the Walker Cup, the Olivier Shield and the LIME Super Cup,” said new Principal Garth Gayle. “We think we are ready to get back to our winning ways,” he indicated.
“It is something that the boys are looking forward to,” hinted coach Jerome Waite, who was also at the helm when Charlie Smith last won a title in 1995. “This would be perfect to win it, since it is the first time playing it.”
Charlie Smith’s football history is most attached to two teams; that of 1988 which saw Eugene Williams captaining the all-conquering squad with Byron Earle as leading goalscorer, as well as the ‘Gang of Five’ in 1995 which dominated almost every match from start to finish. Interestingly, neither went on to win the Olivier Shield, although the latter established their dominance by winning the Walker Cup.
The Manning Cup triple champions (1988, 1990 and 1995) have performed well almost every year since their last impressive win, but have not been able to take home a trophy.
They advanced to the Manning Cup final in 2011 but were thwarted by the impressive St George’s College.
The LIME Super Cup begins on Saturday, October 18.
