Titchfield, Christiana snatch final spots
PORT ANTONIO, Portland — Titchfield High and Christiana High snatched the final two automatic places in the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition after contrasting results in rescheduled games yesterday.
Titchfield won Zone L after a 2-0 win over Happy Grove, while Christiana got the point they needed after a 2-2 draw against Knox College.
They joined the other 28 schools that got automatic berths, as well as the two best third-placed teams, St James High and Old Harbour, into the Inter-zone round that starts tomorrow afternoon.
Titchfield High will play in Zone 6 of the Inter-zone round, along with Marcus Garvey High, Oracabessa High, and Dinthill Technical, while the runners-up Fair Prospect will play in Zone 5, along with Cedric Titus, St Mary Technical, and Old Harbour High.
Christiana High will play in Zone 4 where they will meet Lacovia High, Mile Gully and Clarendon College.
At Carder Park in Port Antonio, Titchfield beat 10-man Happy Grove 2-0 with goals coming from Joel Burke-Green in the 49th minute and Ricardo Russell in the 77th minute to improve to 11 points, surpassing early qualifiers Fair Prospect, who slipped back to second place.
Happy Grove were reduced to 10 players in the 59th minute after Jade Hibbert was sent off.
Christiana High edged out Alston High on goal difference as both ended on 10 points each behind zone winners Holmwood Technical on 16 points.
In Sav-la-Mar, Godfrey Stewart failed to add to their first half 3-0 lead from Saturday when a freak storm forced their game against Manning’s School to be suspended.
In sweltering conditions, yesterday, neither team was able to score, but Godfrey Stewart won Zone D with 19 points, as runners-up Petersfield High played out a 0-0 draw against Grange Hill to finish with 16 points.
