St George’s maul North Street rivals KC 7-0
ST George’s College confirmed their superiority over their North Street rivals and in the process inflicted a humiliating 7-0 annihilation of Kingston College and secured top spot in Group A of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup at Emmett Park yesterday.
The Light Blues, who defeated KC 3-0 in their first encounter, started the day on top of the group with 18 points, six ahead of their fierce rivals, but have now stretched that advantage to an unassailable 21 points from seven games.
KC, who still have two games, including a rescheduled match against Campion College, stayed in second spot on 12 points, which should be enough to guarantee qualification to the second round.
In front of a packed crowd and on a lush Emmett Park surface, the pacy striker Amy Brown bagged a three-timer (36th, 66th and 75th minutes) as St George’s inflicted one of the heaviest and most embarrassing defeats of their North Street neighbours in modern times. It was Brown’s 10th goal of the season.
National Under-17 midfielder Alex Marshall grabbed a brace in the 64th and 73rd minutes, taking his tally to eight, while Shevon Stewart also notched his eighth goal of the season converting a 61st-minute penalty.
Gregory Messam Jnr had opened the floodgates in the 30th minute, combining well with Brown to tear open the KC backline.
The Lenworth Hyde-coached KC were so pathetic as they crumpled in manner reminiscent of Brazil, who capitulated 1-7 to Germany at this summer’s World Cup.
After coming out in the second half only two goals down, KC conceded five goals in 14 minutes — starting from the 61st minute to the 75th minute.
“If you are playing a team like George’s and come into the game with this mentality, you will get lot of goals scored against you and that’s what happened today,” said Hyde.
Meanwhile, St George’s assistant coach Marcel Gayle said, despite winning the first encounter easily, he didn’t expect such a wide margin of victory.
“I know we have the pedigree and quality, but we didn’t expect to score seven goals today, ” said Gayle.
