MarMar tops Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament
PORT ANTONIO, Portland — MurMur, owned by Audley Porter, topped the 51st Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament which ended at the Old Marina Friday evening.
MarMar will represent Jamaica at the 15th Bonnier-IGFA Invitational World Offshore Championship at Marina Pez Vela, Quepos, Costa Rica, next year.
The champion started the tournament by tagging and releasing the first marlin on day one, and on the second day, went ahead of the pack by tagging and releasing two as angler Michael Habib accounted for two. On the third day, MurMur continued in the same manner and on the fourth day ended by tagging and releasing five marlins.
For their effort they won the Busha Jervis Trophy – most marlins all tournament; the Rumbar trophy; the Petcom trophy; as Michael Habib was awarded the Guardian General Insurance Trophy for first angler to land or release a marlin.
The angler with the heaviest marlin was David Levy on Diana for his 510-pound catch. He received the Appleton Estate trophy.
A special prize was given to Richard Stewart for his years of involvement with and dedication to the Port Antonio International
Marlin Tournament.
U-Sea-Mi was second for four marlins tagged and released for the Rituals Coffee House trophy. One of their team members was penalised for landing a 280-pound marlin that fell below the required 300 pounds.
Dutchwoman Oliva Fraaije, aboard Insatiable, got the Jamaica Tourist Board trophy for overseas angler. They tagged and released three marlins.
Thirty-two marlins were tagged and released over the four days as two were landed, but only one was qualified. Eleven marlins were reported lost. There were anglers from Jamaica, Haiti, the United States of America, Canada, The Netherlands and Barbados.
