Former champs Rusea’s book Inter-zone berth
BOGUE, St James — Former champions Rusea’s High just made it to the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after getting the point they needed from a 0-0 draw against Zone B winners Frome Technical in their return-round game played at the Colin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea yesterday.
After being beaten 3-0 by Green Island midweek, Rusea’s had to get a point from today’s game to avoid missing the Inter-zone round for the first time since 1991.
Another five schools also advanced in yesterday’s rain-affected matches as several games were rained out and will be replayed on Monday. Some games were not played as coaches or players were reportedly down with flu-like symptoms.
Twenty-five of the 32 teams have now secured their place in the next round that starts on Wednesday, but the other seven, including the two best-placed third-placed teams, will be known on Monday when games have been replayed.
William Knibb Memorial joined Muschett High from Zone C after edging Herbert Morrison 1-0, thanks to Ahkeem Belford’s first-half goal; Lacovia will advance second placed in Zone E despite their game being washed out as Munro College lost 2-0 at home to defending champions St Elizabeth Technical; Fair Prospect High advance from Zone L after drawing 0-0 with Port Antonio, while the other place will be decided on Monday when Titchfield play out-of-contention Happy Grove. Titchfield and Port Antonio High are both on eight points, but Port Antonio have completed their schedule.
Morant Bay High and Paul Bogle, meanwhile, have taken both spots from Zone O after wins today.
Morant Bay edged Seaforth 1-0 in their game, while Paul Bogle High were 3-0 winners over Robert Lightbourne High.
The race for runners-up spot from Zones G and N will be decided on Monday as well.
Holmwood Technical won Zone G yesterday with a 2-1 win over Knox, but Alston High’s 1-1 draw with Spalding has left the door open for Christiana High.
Holmwood are on 16 points, Alston on 10 and have completed their schedule, while Christiana are on nine with a game against Knox (seven points) on Monday.
Old Harbour have completed their schedule in Zone N with 20 points and a plus-14 goal difference, while Vere Technical are also on 20 points and have a game in hand against Tacius Golding on Monday
