Final D’Cup Inter-zone round places up for grabs
PORT ANTONIO, Portland — The last two places in the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition will be decided today, weather permitting with five rescheduled games to be played.
The runners up from Zone G and N are to be decided while the winners and runners-up in Zone D will also be known at the end of the day.
Three schools — Alston High, Christiana High and Knox College — are all in with a chance of joining Zone G winners Holmwood Technical, while one of two teams, Titchfield High and Port Antonio High, can join Fair Prospect High in the Inter-zone that starts on Wednesday.
Thirty schools, including St James High and Old Harbour High, who should be the two best third-placed teams in their respective pools, have already secured their place in the Inter-zone round.
St James High from Zone A and Brimmervale High from Zone J both ended with a points average of 1.625, but the former champions should get the nod having scored 24 goals in their eight games compared to Brimmervale’s nine goals.
Both had finished with identical statistics of four wins, a draw and three losses.
Old Harbour High’s 2.0 points average, 20 points from 10 games was the best in pool two ahead of Lennon High’s 1.75.
Meanwhile, Edwin Allen High and Vere Technical were awarded points from their unplayed games to get the runners-up spots in their respective zones.
Edwin Allen were awarded points after Claude McKay failed to show up for their Zone H game on Saturday and improved to 16 points, two more than Lennon High, behind winners Clarendon College.
Vere Technical got the points from their game against Tacius Golding that was not played due to a clash of colours and moved to 23 points in Zone N behind winners Kemps Hill’s 25 points.
In Zone G, a point would be good enough for Christiana High (nine points) against Knox College (seven points) to edge Alston High, who are on 10 points.
Christiana High have a goal difference of one and the point would give them the advantage over Alston High who are on zero.
Knox College could crash the party, however, as they are on seven points and a win by two clear goals or more would take them past Alston High, who can only watch after drawing 1-1 against out of contention Spalding High on Saturday.
Knox had won the first round game against Christiana 2-1, but another one-goal margin of victory would see Alston advance on the second tie-break of scoring more goals.
The situation in Zone L is a lot less complicated with Titchfield High needing only a point from out of contention Happy Grove to advance ahead of Port Antonio High.
In Zone D, the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) has ruled that only the last 45 minutes of the Godfrey Stewart vs Mannings game will be played after the second half was rained out on Saturday with Godfrey Stewart leading 3-0.
Godfrey Stewart lead with 16 points and a win would secure zone honours over Petersfield, who will host Grange Hill, ISSA has also directed.
The schools that have already secured their place in the Inter-zone round are: Zone A Cornwall College and Green Pond High; Zone B Frome Technical and Rusea’s High; Zone C Muschett High and William Knibb Memorial; Zone D Godfrey Stewart and Petersfield; Zone E St Elizabeth Technical and Lacovia High; Zone F Mile Gully and Manchester High; Zone G Holmwood Technical; Zone H Clarendon College and Edwin Allen; Zone I Cedric Titus and Marcus Garvey; Zone J Oracabessa and St Mary Technical; Zone K Ewarton High and Dinthill Technical; Zone L Fair Prospect High; Zone M Glenmuir High and Garvey Maceo; Zone N Kemps Hill and Vere Technical; Zone O- Morant Bay and Paul Bogle High.
