Highgate flow over August Town 1-0
Highgate United Football Club advanced to the second round of the Flow Champions Cup knockout competition after clipping August Town Football Club 1-0 at UWI Bowl, Mona, yesterday.
Substitute Andre Heslop scored the all-important goal in the fourth minute of extra time after both teams failed to score in regular time.
Maxwell Wilson, manager of the St Mary-based team, expressed satisfaction, as he hailed his team for a spirited performance.
“I am definitely satisfied. With the team that we have and the training sessions that we have had so far, this was more of a hard-fought game than anything else.
“We only started training last week…today (yesterday) is the first we are seeing some of them because we had to come with a team with heart…a team that can fight, so we had to use them. So now we will be going back, get them in training and we will be ready for the next game,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Meanwhile, his opposite number Michael McIntosh declared that a lack of readiness led to their undoing.
“We came in with a good vibe even though we didn’t have the preparation that we needed to have for this competition, the flu virus played a big part in it and that really showed in all aspects of the game,” he said.
McIntosh added that the team was rebounding from a sad event that took place at one of their practise sessions where 22-year-old Saed Francis, who had a heart problem fell ill and succumbed to his ailment.
In other games, Lamar McKenzie netted a three-timer as Black Stars of St Ann whipped Manchester’s New Green 7-1 at Brooks Park Sports Complex, while former Premier League outfit Portmore United stopped Old Harbour Bay United 4-3 on penalties, after they played out a 2-2 scoreline in regular and extra time.
