Green Island shock Rusea’s in rescheduled game
GREEN ISLAND, Hanover — The race for the second Inter-zone spot from Zone B of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition was thrown wide open yesterday after Green Island shocked 10-time champions Rusea’s 3-0 in the rescheduled return-round game played in Green Island.
Rusea’s went into the game needing only a draw to join zone leaders Frome Technical, but were ambushed as Ackeem Williams, Shane Sterling and Oshane Walker scored for Green Island to beat Rusea’s High for the first time since 1996. It was the second loss for Rusea’s in the first round in over 60 games after they lost 2-1 to Frome Technical earlier.
The result means Frome Technical will win the zone before they even meet Rusea’s in their highly anticipated return-round game on Saturday.
Rusea’s are on nine points, while Green Island are on six and a big win over winless Merlene Ottey on Saturday could see Rusea’s failing to advance past the first round in over 20 years.
Meanwhile Godfrey Stewart High and Petersfield both advanced to the Inter-zone round after contrasting results yesterday to bring the number of schools advancing to 15.
Godfrey Stewart took over the lead in Zone D with a 5-0 whipping of Grange Hill in Sav-la-Mar, improving to 16 points, two more than Petersfield high who were held 0-0 by Mannings School.
Another four teams could join the 15 that have already qualified when the return-round continues today with another 21 games.
Lacovia High, Marcus Garvey High, Ewarton High and Kemps Hill High could book their places today.
It would take an unlikely win over defending champions and qualifiers St Elizabeth Technical for Lacovia to advance and with BB Coke to come on Saturday, it could open the door for Munro College to sneak back in.
Munro College will face Maggotty High today and a win would move them to within two points of Lacovia should they lose to STETHS’ today.
