KC clip Jose Marti 1-0 in Manning Cup
CAPTAIN Kashane Jones scored in the second half to give Kingston College a 1-0 win over Jose Marti Technical that moved the North Street-based outfit to 12 points in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup competition at Clovelly Park (Kingston College) yesterday.
The narrow, but important win from the boot of Jones in the 70th minute, keeps Kingston College in second spot and in close touch with their neighbours, St George’s College, who lead the Group A standings on 15 points.
Jose Marti were losing for the fourth time from seven matches, having garnered two wins and a draw, and remain in fourth on seventh points. Meanwhile, Kingston College were winning their fourth game of the season from five matches. They lost to St George’s College 0-3 earlier this season, but have a game in hand.
“The victory and the three points are very important to our aim, but I am disappointed with the number of goals scored by us,” KC’s coach Lenworth Hyde pointed out. “We have to score more goals,” he insisted, “as it could come down to a point where goal average could determine who wins the group.
Calvert Fitzgerald, coach of Jose Marti, thought his team played a good game “but just fell short of taking something out of the game. While they showed some amount of commitment in their play, they lacked real commitment and a wholesome desire to win. But let us remember in the Manning Cup competition you cannot go around and choose-players, like club football, so you will just have to work with what you have,” Fitzgerald reflected.
