Green Pond move to next round in style
GREEN POND, St James — Green Pond High qualified for the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition yesterday after beating Anchovy High 4-0 in their rescheduled first-round game played at the Green Pond ground.
Green Pond’s fifth-straight win, took them to 16 points, two behind Zone A leaders Cornwall College, who they play on Wednesday while ending St James High’s seven-year run of making it past the first round.
Meanwhile, Clarendon College became the second school after Cornwall College to win their sixth- straight after edging Inter-zone contenders Edwin Allen High 1-0 in their rescheduled Zone H game.
Lacovia High moved closer to joining St Elizabeth Technical from Zone E after beating Maggotty High 2-1 in their rescheduled game to move to 19 points, three behind the leaders and five more than third placed Munro College.
Christiana moved into second place in Zone G on eight points after beating Spalding High 2-1, while the game between leaders Holmwood Technical and Knox was not played as it was heard that several members of the Knox team were suffering from various illnesses.
Today, former champions Rusea’s High from Zone B and Godfrey Stewart and Petersfield High from Zone D should advance to the Inter-zone round. Rusea’s need only a point from Green Island to join Frome Technical in the Inter-zone round. Both Petersfield and Godfrey Stewart are on 13 points and need only a draw to book their places as well. Petersfield, which sat out the competition last year, lead on goal difference.
The Green Pond vs Anchovy game was originally set for September 20 but was not played due to the fact that water had settled on the field.
The game was then moved to Green Pond yesterday, but despite the home field advantage, it took them almost all of the first half to break down a dogged Anchovy defence.
Kaschief Brown scored his 11th goal of the season in the 43rd minute to give Green Pond the lead at half-time.
The second half was easier for Green Pond as they got goals from Nicoy James, an own goal from Akeem Coates, and finally Omar Clarke to complete and easy win.
In their five-game winning run, Green Pond have conceded just once, in a 7-1 win over Irwin in the first round.
