Cavalier go atop RSPL after edging MBU
CAVALIER Soccer Club maintained their good start in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) when they clipped defending champions Montego Bay United 1-0 at Stadium East playing field, yesterday.
The win extended their unbeaten run and propelled them to the top of the standings with eight points, while Montego Bay United slipped to sixth place on four points. It was Montego Bay United who dominated proceedings in a very dull first half.
Their best chance came through a 20-yard free kick by Winston Wilkinson, which was well held by Cavalier’s goalkeeper Kadeem Davis. Both teams seemed more composed after the resumption and it was the host who settled first and should have gone ahead.
However, Girvon Brown’s cross was hit wide by Jermaine Ricketts. Shortly after, Claudius Blackburn delivered another telling cross, but Chevone Williams failed to make contact with the ball as he slammed into the upright.
He was not injured and later returned to the game. Cavalier continued to press and substitute Atapharoy Bygrave got in behind defenders but his shot went straight into the arms of a waiting Garen Downie.
The deadlock was eventually broken when another substitute, Chevone Marsh, assisted Girvon Brown, who easily slotted home in the 83rd minute. Montego Bay United responded with a few chances of their own, but it was not meant to be. The physical contest saw three players from either team being cautioned.
