Arnett ride west to face Reno
Beset by a string of postponements, the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) hobbles on today with action in only four of the six originally scheduled games in the fourth round.
The mosquito-borne chikungunya virus has been identified as the reason for the two postponed games.
The clash between Waterhouse FC and Harbour View FC at the Drewsland Stadium was put off days ago due to players from the former team falling ill to suspected cases of the virus.
More recently, newcomers Barbican FC stepped forward with similar
concerns, forcing the postponement of their encounter with Sporting Central Academy at Juici Park in Clarendon.
Though the chikungunya virus — transmitted by the infected Aedes aegypti mosquito — has hit the RSPL, undermining victims with joint pain and flu-like symptoms and forcing a few postponements, it has not been all gloom and doom.
Leaders Arnett Gardens FC will travel almost the entire width of the island to face Reno FC at the Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland in a game starting at 3:30 pm.
Spectators can expect a keen contest between two of the more storied teams in Jamaica’s club football.
South St Andrew-based Arnett Gardens, most previously the national
champions in the 2001-02 season, have seven points after two wins and a draw in their three matches.
Promoted Reno, the title-holders exactly two decades ago, are also unbeaten and lie third on five points from three games.
In another 3:30 pm kick-off, 10th-placed Tivoli Gardens FC (two points) host seventh-placed Rivoli United (two points) at the Edward Seaga
Sports Complex. Though on the same number of points, Rivoli are ahead due to a better goal difference.
At the Stadium East playing field, unbeaten Cavalier SC, who are fourth with five points, host the champions Montego Bay United, who are in fifth place on four points, in an encounter set to commence at 5:00 pm.
The televised RSPL Monday Night game will see cellar team Boys’ Town FC (one point) borrowing the nearby Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex to host 11th-placed Clarendon-based team Humble Lion FC (one point). That kick-off is set for 9:15 pm.
