How to be a better manager
AN employee’s growth and success have a lot to do with the kind of supervisor he has, and unfortunately, many people get promoted to the role of supervisor without the requisite skills. This means that though you may have the degree that made you seem like the best man for the job, when it comes to things like people and management skills, you may be lacking.
Unfortunately, managers often fail to coach their employees to contribute to the organisation in a meaningful may, because they themselves didn’t receive management training.
And this training, and applying the training, is key to having a productive work environment, where employees thrive.
Shantol Rush, human resource consultant at Choice Business Solutions said to be a better manager, proper communication skills are needed to build relationships and maintain them.
“We won’t like everyone because of their attitude or for whatever reason, but they’re on our team, so we need to know how to work with different personalities and remain positive and maintain good relationships,” Rush said.
She added that as managers the responsibility is to remain positive and encourage optimism.
Here are some ways you can be a better manager:
Motivate your team
It is often said that encouragement sweetens labour. An employee’s drive to work is often dependent on the rewards he will gain. People work for pay, incentives and recognition. Figure out what your staff wants and see how best you can supply their needs. The end result will likely be more productivity.
Build your team
Explain to your staff that there is no “I” in team and teamwork, makes the dream work. One the sense of togetherness is established, each member will do their part to ensure they are not the weakest link.
Manage and lead
If you can’t direct your team, your motivation will be useless. Telling our staff they’re the best thing since sliced bread makes no sense if you can’t give pointers and direction to encourage more productivity. Turn the motivation towards a goal and lead the team to it.
Become a better you
As a manager you should strive to improve your weak areas. You may snap at people and disregard their points, and that may be why your productivity is low. First impressions last and last impressions are lasting. You don’t want your team member to see you as a toxic boss.
Take a break
If an engine is over worked, changes are the vehicle it is in won’t function properly. Give yourself a chance to relax and recharge, otherwise you will be less tolerant of your employees.
