Smoother flow coming for Portmore
DRIVERS who live in Portmore, St Catherine, and work in Kingston, should have an easier flow in the next two weeks.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Calvin Allen, newly appointed head of the Elletson Road-based Police Traffic Division, plans are under way to reduce the morning peak-hour congestion.
“We are looking at the traffic from the RUBiS service station in Naggo Head heading east towards Bayside, then onwards to the toll booth. We intend to turn that road into a one-way between the hours of 6:00 am — 8:00 am,” he told Auto.
“We intend to do this in two weeks’ time. I have spoken to the office of the municipality of Portmore, including the mayor and councillors, the JUTC [Jamaica Urban Transit Company] and the National Works Agency. We’re working out the finer details,” he continued.
SSP Allen said the move will reduce the bottleneck created in that area with the traffic coming from Hellshire, Greater Portmore and Portmore Pines.
“The NWA is currently doing the signage, which will be placed in strategic places. The proposed move has to be properly enunciated. Therefore, I am also using the two weeks to do a public education campaign, so everyone will be on the same page before roll-out,” said SSP Allen.
Portmore, also known as the Sunshine City, is a dormitory community that neighbours Kingston and Spanish Town. Some estimates place the population between 300,000 to 500,000.
