XLCR pound Cumberland 4-0 to soar in Group B
A brace from Rasheed Anderson spurred Excelsior High to a 4-0 whipping of Cumberland High in their rescheduled Group B fixture of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup at Courtney Walsh Oval yesterday.
Anderson netted in the 76th and 87th minutes with the other goals coming from captain Christopher Thorpe (67th) and Tereek Anderson (90th).
The win pushed Excelsior to 10 points, three behind leaders Charlie Smith whom they will face on Saturday.
Winning coach Leebert Halliman was happy with the win, but displeased with the manner in which it came.
“As it is we have to be happy with the three points, but it wasn’t a good performance. We scored four goals and so we are grateful because we just want to come out of the zone,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Halliman added that despite not being at full strength his team will be aiming to give their all when they visit Charlie Smith.
Meanwhile, Cumberland coach Wayne Fraser was left disappointed as the team wanted to win the game in honour of their late principal Dahlia Black, who passed away on Monday.
“Indiscipline contributed to our loss today (yesterday). We wanted to win this game for our principal… we held them throughout the first half, but gave away some cheap goals,” he lamented.
The first half lacked substance and left nothing to be desired as both teams failed to hold their composure and opted to pursue an ugly aerial game.
The second half saw a more offensively enterprising Excelsior, and that thrust paid off when substitute Rusheed Nembhard was brought down inside the penalty area. Thorpe stepped up and easily converted. Anderson got his first when a defensive error allowed him to easily slot home from close range, with his second coming shortly after when he greeted a cross from Thorpe and placed the ball into the left corner of the goal.
The points were then made safe when Tereek Anderson fired past a reluctant Ricardo Bellafante after a cheeky one-two combination with Nembhard.
