First of two funeral services for Portland stalwart, Sandra Minott, today
PORT ANTONIO, Portland — Portland’s Norwich Primary School community Tuesday afternoon reflected on the life of Sandra Minott, wife of noted scientist and educator Dr Dennis Minott, describing her as a dedicated, committed Christian woman and meticulous worker who strived for excellence.
Minott, who lost a long battle to cancer two weeks ago, was president of Norwich Primary School’s Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA) for the last two years and board member for the last five years.
In addition to serving Norwich Primary, Minott was active at Boundbrook Basic School, helping to raise funds for the development of
both schools.
She also worked the Faculty of Science at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education in Portland.
She was a “powerful stalwart who was positive”, Norwich Primary teacher Paulette Haase told colleagues and community members during the memorial at the school.
Omar Barnes, vice-chairman of the PTA, agreed, adding: “Sandra was diligent and gave of her very best and went beyond and above the call of duty. She used her life as a motivation to get us to do our best.”
Norwich Primary Principal Claudia McLean said “she believed in children, was devoted to the school and was a devoted wife”.
Another parent, Christine Payne, said that Minott had “gone home to rest” as she was a committed Christian and dedicated woman who displayed the “fruits of the spirit”.
Payne challenged all present to continue Minott’s work at the school as her desire after getting two new classrooms was to get a bus shed erected for the students. “We must do this in her memory,” Payne implored.
Chair of the school board, Elith Simpson, referred to Minott as “the mother of the school who was always willing, never said no, and was always supported by her husband”.
Paulette Allen and Suzette Blake gave musical tributes which were well-received.
Dr Minott expressed thanks to the school and said his last memory of his wife was her sitting up in bed, raising her hand and waving as he and their two daughters — Melisa and Rama — left the Port Antonio Hospital after
visiting her.
The first of two thanksgiving services for Sandra Minott’s life is scheduled for today at Open Bible Church, Folly Road, Port Antonio starting at 3:30 pm.
The second service is planned for this Saturday at Havenhill Baptist Church, Mannings Hill Road in Kingston at 3:30 pm.
