Rusea’s rebound with 5-0 win
LUCEA, Hanover — Ten-time champions Rusea’s High School rebounded from their first loss in Zone B since 2007 by trouncing Merlene Ottey High 5-0 in their return-round ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea, yesterday.
Deshane Beckford scored a hat-trick to lead the rampaging Rusea’s High team to their third win of the season as they took over the lead on goal difference from Frome Technical, both on nine points each.
Kyle Anderson and substitute Jevaughny Roache got the other goals for Rusea’s, who were beaten 2-1 by Frome on Saturday, snapping a 59-game unbeaten run in Zone B games.
Meanwhile, Cornwall College extended their winning run to five games in Zone A with a 4-0 win over Anchovy High, while Cedric Titus’s five-game win streak was snapped when they were held 2-2 by York Castle High in Brown’s Town in Zone I action.
Alrick Ottey scored his first daCosta Cup hat-trick and Jourdaine Fletcher scored in his fourth-straight game as Cornwall College kept up their torrid pace.
Ottey’s hat-trick, which took his tally to five goals, came two days after his brother Allan scored his first Premier League hat-trick for Montego Bay United.
Kaschief Brown scored five times and Peter Campbell bagged a brace for Green Pond High in their 10-0 whipping of Irwin High in another Zone A game played at Irwin.
Cedric Titus’s dreams of becoming the first school to get to six wins ended as they were ambushed by York Castle, who were getting only their third point from the Trelawny school in over 10 years.
Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) beat BB Coke 2-0 with goals from Jovoney Brown and Shawn Genius, while Munro College beat Newell High 5-0.
Today, former champions Frome Technical as well as Muschett High will put their respective three-game win streaks on the line in Zones B and C, respectively, while Dinthill Technical and Paul Bogle High will both seek to avenge first-round losses.
Frome Technical will host Green Island in a game that sees both teams coming off good wins on Saturday. Green Island, who are seeking to get back into the race for a place in the inter-zone round, beat Merlene Ottey in their last game after two losses.
On the other hand, Frome Technical have won all three games played and beat favourites Rusea’s High on Saturday, snapping their nearly 60-game unbeaten run in Zone B.
Muschett have grabbed hold of the lead in Zone C but face an ambitious William Knibb today in a Trelawny derby in Wakefield.
Muschett had won the first game 1-0 but will expect a strong response from the Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-coached William Knibb today.
Two-time champions Dinthill Technical will seek to avenge their first-round loss to a slumping Charlemont High, who are winless in two games since they beat Dinthill.
Dinthill lead Zone K on goal difference over Ewarton High, both on 10 points, while Charlemont are on seven points in third place.
Paul Bogle High are undefeated since losing their opening match to Zone O leaders Morant Bay and will be confident coming off a 6-0 win over Robert Lightbourne on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the battle for supremacy in Zone D will continue between Godfrey Stewart and Petersfield High, both on 10 points. Godfrey Stewart, who lead on goals scored, will play away to Black River, while Petersfield host Grange Hill.
Mile Gully High could join Manchester High in the lead on 12 points in Zone F if they can beat Belair High for a second time this season. Mile Gully are on nine points, three less than Manchester High, while deCarteret College and Cross Keys will meet for the first time after their first-round game was declared null and void by ISSA.
Zone J leaders St Mary Technical will seek to snap a two-game winless run when they take on St Mary High at Richmond and will seek to beat their rivals for the second time after a 3-0 victory in the first round.
