Guardian Life Junior Girls Tennis Champs on this weekend
THE final event in the Guardian Life Open Junior Girls Tennis Championship for this year will be held this weekend at the Liguanea Club.
The second in the series of tournaments will take on a different approach, with the merging of the girls’ tournament, which has been held separately over the years.
According to tournament organiser Llockett McGregor the girls will compete in three categories — beginners, intermediate and advanced levels, while the boys will serve off in the 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under categories. However, McGregor said the main focus would be on the girls and motivating them to be on par with their male peers.
“We want to maximise the playing potential of the girls. The level of participation from the girls has been very poor over the years, so we want to create a level playing field for everybody,” McGregor said.
McGregor, through his foresight four years ago, introduced an all-girls tournament in a bid to increase the number of girls participating in the junior tournaments. Guardian Life agreed to this move and had included as part of its tournament series an all-girls tournament.
The weekend tournament is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am and will engage 90 of the country’s junior players vying for trophy prizes. The players will be placed in the categories based on their abilities and will be awarded points at the end of the tournament based on the national junior ranking system.
Guardian Life in its role as a good corporate citizen has by way of its sponsorship spanning nine years contributed to the development of junior players across the island.
