Family takes centre stage at Wolmer’s
FAMILY entertainment is the aim for the 24th annual season of dance by the Wolmer’s Dance Troupe scheduled for the Little Theatre in St Andrew this weekend.
Barbara McDaniel, artistic director, says the performances on Friday and Saturday aim to entertain everyone from the “babe in arms to the grandparents”.
“This year was particularly challenging as we got off to a late start. Normally we start rehearsals from June. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, we were not able to commence until July. The dancers went off for their summer holidays in August and we resumed at the start of the new school year. But, we are ready and will deliver a great show for our audience,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
This year’s season has been reduced by one performance as McDaniel and her team have given up Sunday, September 28 to the worldrenowned American dance company Ailey II.
“We had to give up the night to Ailey II,” said McDaniel. “They are being brought to Jamaica by the Wolmer’s Trust as part of the celebrations in observance of the schools‚ (Wolmer’s Boys’ and Girls’‚) 285th anniversary,” she said.
McDaniel further explained that one of the highlights this year is a major reggae number which will see the full 85-member cast taking to the stage inside the Little Theatre for what she describes as an “energetic and colourful number”.
The Wolmer’s Dance Troupe is made up of students of the Wolmer’s Preparatory and High Schools and the dancers range in age from 3-16 years old.
