Charlie hit Mona for five
Charlie Smith hammered a moderate Mona High 5-1 at the Anthony Spaulding Sport Complex yesterday to extend their lead atop Group B in their ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition.
A quick double from Kimani Osbourne in minutes 37 and 39 carried the Jerome Waite-coached Charlie Smith to a 2-1 lead at the break after Mona pulled one back in minute 45 through Terrence White who looked quite capable.
Sensing that though moderate Mona High were not going to lie down and play dead, Charlie Smith increased the lead two minutes into the second half to 3-1 from an Odane Samuels strike. Second half substitute Anthony Scott made it 4-1 in minute 58 before the industrious Chevon Brooks completed the carnage with a simple left foot tap in with 13 minutes remaining.
Leading the group with 13 points from five games with four wins and a draw, Charlie Smith are now in a very strong position to top the group, having already accounted for Excelsior, who are next in the group on seven points.
While Charlie Smith looked a seasoned bunch Mona High lacked their virtuosity being largely a colts side of 15 and 16 year olds. However, according to coach Cornel Spence, his young prospects were hampered in their preparation “but have shown enough to expect them to do very in the near future with improved conditions”.
