Cedric Titus hunt sixth straight win
BROWN’S TOWN, St Ann — Cedric Titus High will seek to extend the best record in schoolboy football today when they travel to York Castle in an ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup Zone I return-round game.
The Clarks Town-based school are off to a fast start, winning their first five games and will start favourites to win number six against the team they beat 3-1 in the opening round on September 6.
It will be a tall task for York Castle to beat Cedric Titus, who they have not beaten in over a decade while managing just two draws in their last 20 games against each other.
Yesterday former champions Clarendon College made it five wins in a row after blanking Claude McKay 4-0 in their rescheduled Zone H game in Chapelton.
The win moved Clarendon College to 15 points, opening up a five-point lead over second-placed Edwin Allen, both from five games played.
Garvey Maceo High blanked Brown’s Town 3-0 in a return-round game to take over the lead in Zone I on more goals scored, over Cedric Titus.
Both schools are on 15 points and have the same goal difference of nine, but Marcus Garvey have played one game more.
Mile Gully moved to within three points of Zone F leaders Manchester High after beating DeCarteret College 2-1 in their rescheduled game.
Mile Gully scored their third win from four games and are on nine points, trailing Manchester High, who have won all four games so far and are on 12 points.
Meanwhile, 12 other games will be played today, including Cornwall College seeking a fifth straight win, and second over Anchovy High this season in Zone A; Rusea’s High will seek to rebound against Merlene Ottey after losing to Frome Technical on Saturday; defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Lacovia High will seek to stay in the top two spots in Zone E, while Garvey Maceo and Denbigh High could pass Zone M leaders Glenmuir High on goal difference with wins.
Cornwall College have conceded one goal after four games in the first half of Zone A play, a penalty against Anchovy in the first game and since then have gone 225 minutes without conceding while scoring 16 goals in the same period.
In their first meeting, Anchovy High were coming off a big 4-1 win at home but since losing to Cornwall College, they went down 5-0 to St James High and will need to lift their standard significantly to get back in the race for a place in the Inter-zone round.
Rusea’s High are expected to be on the war path against winless Merlene Ottey High after being ambushed by Frome Technical on Saturday, snapping a 59-game unbeaten streak in Zone B.
Frome were the last team to beat Rusea’s in a Zone B game dating back to the 2007 season when they lost by the same 2-1 margin.
Merlene Ottey High have never taken a point against Rusea’s and the trend should continue today.
STETHS had their winning start snapped on Saturday when they hosted Munro College and will hope to start a new streak today when they travel to Junction to face BB Coke, whom they smashed 9-0 in the opening game.
Since that game BB Coke have won twice, drawn once and lost to Lacovia 1-0 on Saturday with a goal aggregate of 6-4 over the period, and are expected to put on a better show today.
STETHS should, however, win again and continue to lead Zone E.
Lacovia High had edged Maggotty High 1-0 in the first round and another win today would keep them at least five points ahead of Munro College, who will be at home to Newell High.
The three-way race in Zone M could intensify if Garvey Maceo beat Bustamante High and Denbigh High beat Porus as they did in the first round.
If they win, they would join leaders Glenmuir High on 10 points each.
