Wolmer’s march past Trench Town 3-0
WOLMER’S Boys’ continued their dominance of Group E when they blanked Trench Town High School 3-0 in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup competition at Heroes’ Circle, yesterday.
Wolmer’s were recording their fourth victory from as many games and are now on 12 points; three ahead of closest rivals Holy Trinity, who are on nine points.
Chavel Crooks opened the scoring in the 51st minute before Stuart Payne (53rd) and Khori Bennett (90th) completed the victory.
Winning coach Ludlow Bernard was happy with the results.
“I think it was a good performance from them…Today (yesterday) was a well-worked team game, we did string quite a number of passes, but we need to finish a little bit better,” he said.
Meanwhile, a disappointed Damion Watson thought the loss of four of their top players was a major blow to his team.
“We lost two of our better players to sickness and we lost two other players to Jamaica College. However, I think we came out and we played very well in the first half…In the second half the team kind of switched off, and it cost us the game,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
It was all Wolmer’s from the opening whistle as they forced the attack on a timid-looking Trench Town outfit. They created a number of goalscoring opportunities, but Trench Town’s goalkeeper Romari Martin ensured that his team remained in the game at the end of the first half.
The Heroes’ Circle boys came out firing after the resumption and thought they had opened the scoring through Bennett, but it was ruled offside.
However, they made amends when Crooks fired a free kick from 23 yards out which slipped through the legs of the goalkeeper.
Shortly after, Payne got in behind the defenders to easily slot home.
The introduction of their talismanic player, Jaheel Hyde, for the first time this season sparked some excitement from the home crowd, and he didn’t disappoint them. The 17-year-old Hyde hit the crossbar once and the upright twice before finding the target from an offside position.
Nonetheless, a cheeky run by Rojay Smith, who beat three defenders, set up Bennett to seal the win in time added.
