Goal drought in Barbican, Cavalier affair
Newcomers Barbican FC held Cavalier SC to a 0-0 scoreline in yesterday’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus.
With the result, both teams remained undefeated in the 2014-15 season. Cavalier moved to five points from their three outings, while Barbican have two points with a game in hand.
Junior Francis, the head coach of Barbican, was satisfied with the result.
“We wanted the three points and we got some opportunities, but we didn’t capitalise on them. I guess we have to settle for the one point,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Francis said that three regular starting players falling ill with flu-like symptoms ahead of the game, forced last-minute adjustments.
The Cavalier coach Rudolph Speid felt his team should have left UWI with all three points.
“I’m not satisfied because we got some good looks, especially in the first half that we should have done better with. I have to give Barbican some credit as they came and played hard because they want to make an impression in the league,” Speid said.

Chances were few and far between in a game characterised by generally good defending and conversely, lack of striking firepower from both teams.
Barbican, using the UWI facility while they renovate their home base off East Kings House Road, were on the back foot for much of the first half and Cavalier could have grabbed the lead, however Dwayne Holmes was left distraught when his lobbed efforted came back off the goal frame.
The second half was a more even affair as both teams tried to find the winner. But despite good interplay in the midfield areas, they were both let down by lack of incisiveness in their respective attacking third.
Barbican were particularly guilty, glaringly lacking the killer instinct when they faced the Cavalier defence.
In another game yesterday, Montego Bay United crushed Boys’ Town 4-0 at WesPow Park.
