Battle of the Gardens
THE 2014-2015 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) campaign enters its third week of competition today with five matches, including the anticipated humdinger between big-time rivals Arnett Gardens FC and Tivoli Gardens FC at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, starting at 6:00 pm.
Arnett Gardens FC, national champions in the 2001-02 season, are in second position on four points from two games, while Tivoli Gardens, more recent champions of the 2010-11 edition, have two points after a pair of drawn encounters.
Traditionally, battles between the teams have been fiercely contested, laced with open, entertaining football and ample moments of sheer brilliance, so spectators could be in for a treat.
For Arnett Gardens, the game represents their first one on home soil since the season began. Recently, the team was forced to host Rivoli United FC at the Stadium East field due to a home ban picked up after a bottle-throwing altercation at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex at the end of last season.
In another clash that could spark significant interest, two standard-bearers for their respective locations match wits.
Harbour View FC, dubbed the Stars of the East, welcome Reno FC, one of the powerhouses of western Jamaica, to the Harbour View Mini-Stadium in a 3:30 pm kick-off.
Harbour View, winners in 2012-13, have only a point from their two games. But fellow former champions Reno, who are making a re-entry to top-flight action after being demoted, currently lead Arnett Gardens at the top by virtue of scoring more goals.
At the WesPow Park in St James, the title-holders Montego Bay United (one point) host Boys’ Town FC (one) in a clash scheduled to commence at 3:30 pm.
At the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus, newcomers Barbican FC (one point) entertain fellow Kingston & St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) team Cavalier SC (four points) in yet another 3:30 pm start.
Barbican are currently using UWI for home matches while they complete renovation at their usual base off East King’s House Road.
In the other game on today, Clarendon-based Sporting Central Academy (three points) make the trek to Ewarton, St Catherine, to meet Rivoli United (two points) at the Bramwell Clarke Complex in a game set to begin at 4:00 pm.
In the flagship RSPL Monday Night game to be televised live, Humble Lion FC (one point) entertain last season’s beaten finalists Waterhouse FC (three points) at the Effortville Community Centre in Clarendon.
