Travel agents slug it out in two-day Sandals tourney
OCHO RIOS, St Ann — At press time yesterday, there was no clear winner in the 12th Sandals USA Travel Agents’ Golf tournament as two teams scored the same number of points over the two days of competition.
Group Four and 23 of the 25-group four-man scramble format played by USA-based travel agents scored a combined 122 points (each scoring 20 under par) in a close contest over both days.
The first day’s play on Friday ended with three teams — the other group being 14 — tied on 61 points (10 under par), and the keen competition on the greens of the Sandals Golf and Country Club in Upton, St Ann, continued into yesterday. Group Four is made up of Brian Rogers, Jim McAleese, Samuel Silverman, and Earnest Creal, while Group 23 consists of Jason Dill,
Cory Phelps, Roland Farrar, and Ruth Etheridge. An awards ceremony was scheduled for the Sandals Grande Riviera last night where the official placements would be announced. General manager of Sandals Golf and Country Club Tony Ebanks said he was pleased with this year’s tournament on many fronts. “I think my expectation was met in terms of the flow of play, in terms of the results as we had three teams that were tied at 10 under par on the first day. The fun factor was also good and everybody just played good golf,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
He said, from a player potential standpoint, there was a good mix. “We had a mix as we had people who were playing for the very first time, people who play once a month, and you have what you call avid golfers and these are individuals who play every weekend. So it was a good cross section of different levels of ability,” Ebanks explained.
