St George’s College (STGC) maintained the perfect start to the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition with a comfortable 4-0 win over Jose Marti High in Group A action at Winchester Park yesterday.

STGC with their third win from as many games, moved to nine points following victories over Waterford (1-0), and Campion College (11-1), thus taking their goal scoring tally to 16 for and one against.

Arch rivals Kingston College also jumped to nine points following their 1-0 away victory over Waterford High, but remained second on goal difference. Both Waterford and Jose Marti are on three points each with Campion College pointless.

In front of a large turnout at Winchester Park, the Neville Bell-coached boys were never in danger of losing, but could be a little disappointed that they didn’t register a bigger winning margin, moreso because Jose Marti played one short for the last half-an-hour after Kaslwayne Allen picked up his second yellow card in the 63rd minute.

Jose Marti, without a reserve goalkeeper, had to suffer more as starting goalkeeper Joshua Thorpe injured his leg in the 65th minute and barely limped around for the remainder of the game, and being unable to kick the ball, reverted to throwing.

But before all of that, the game was truly over as a contest. Defender Kyeno Jones headed the ‘Light Blues’ in front in the 15th minute before the improving Amoy Brown grabbed a brace in the 56th and 89th minutes.

Substitute Shevon Stewart got on the scoresheet scoring in the 62nd minute.

The result was more impressive considering that the victors played without their influential rising stars Alex Marshall and Martin Davis, a clear indication that they will be a force to be reckoned with later in the competition.

The battle for top spot in the group is truly on between the STGC and North Street rivals KC and their clash on Saturday should be a humdinger, with the group winner guaranteed a spot in the LIME Super Cup.

Meanwhile, defending champions Jamaica College (JC) scored their third consecutive win when they whipped Norman Manley 3-0 to take a stranglehold on Group G.

JC are on nine points, five ahead of second-placed Norman Manley with four points. Kingston Technical gained their first point of the competition following their 2-2 draw with Jonathan Grant, who edged to four points.

In Group E, Wolmer’s Boys also took charge edging Holy Trinity 1-0 in their top-of-the-table clash at the Bell Chung Oval, jumping to nine points from three games.

Holy Trinity remained in second spot with six points, while Clan Carthy registered their first win after beating Spanish Town 1-0.
