Camperdown rally to edge Haile Selassie 2-1
Second half goals from Ajuma Johnson and Akino Saddler carried Camperdown High to a 2-1 win over Haile Selassie High in an ISSA/LIME Group D Manning Cup game at Alpha Boys’ Home ground yesterday.
Haile Selassie, who led the group before yesterday’s game, took the lead in the ninth minute through the industrious Jurian Lewis after the Camperdown goalkeeper Adriano Phillips had made a mess of a high cross.
After this setback Camperdown continued to look more assertive, but Haile Selassie kept them fighting for survival by blocking every attempt on goal with well organised defensive ploys. This went on until they turned around for the second session. Camperdown then won a free kick on top of the box from where Johnson rattled the back of the Haile Selassie net with a fierce left footed shot that scudded past the goalkeeper. This seemed to rattle the Payne Avenue-based school and Camperdown went in search of the winner that came in minute 77 when Saddler flicked the ball into the Haile Selassie goal from a difficult angle close in.
Both teams are now locked on nine points from three wins but by virtue of yesterday’s victory Camperdown moved ahead of Haile Selassie on goal difference. Haile Selassie have so far completed four games, while Camperdown have a rescheduled rained-out game against Papine.
