Getting to know… Loraine Moses
This is the final in a series looking at the stories of each challenger, how they got to where they are and their commitment to becoming better versions of themselves.
JAMAICA Observer/Gymkhana Absolute Fitness challenger Loraine Moses believes the third time will be the charm. She is determined to define her body so as to get the look she thinks her fiancé deserves, and to be able to fit into her wedding dress.
However, she will now have to get a new dress, one that shows off her curves and matches her bubbly personality, because the one she had chosen no longer fits.
“When I started my weight-loss training last year October, I had lost a considerable amount of weight, so I had pockets of fat,” Moses told the Jamaica Observer in a recent interview. “So I think with that, and the fact that I wanted to get married and actually look nice in my dress, I was selected.”
Last October, Moses was 234 pounds. She is now a little less than 170 pounds. No date has yet been set for the wedding, but after proposing for the third time in several years, her fiancé, Cleon Craig, is determined to make it down the aisle this time and so is Moses.
“I have known him since I was 12 and he was 16,” Moses recalled. “One Sunday he just looked at me and said I am going to be his wife. And of course at 12, somebody telling you that, that’s like crazy.
“So we maintained a friendship and long after we got separated for about 14 years,” Moses continued. “We reconciled in February and decided after two engagements that we will make it official.”
He had last proposed in 2010 but after a year together and him living in England, the couple decided it would not work.
“But then last year I decided to go to England to look for him and everything changed from that,” said a gushing Moses. “And when I realised that this can actually work, that’s when I came back and decided I have to lose this weight because the majority of the weight actually went on then.
“Maybe it was the anticipation and not knowing what would happen, so maybe that caused me to binge a little,” Moses explained.
Moses told the Sunday Observer that everybody is rooting for them. But her journey to her well-contoured body has not been easy.
“It’s been hard. I got frustrated a lot, especially in the first part when I didn’t achieve my body fat goal. But my trainer encouraged me,” Moses said of the Jamaica Observer/Gymkhana Absolute Fitness Challenge. “It’s hard but rewarding because you are seeing the visual… I think Peter is the perfect fit for me because he is so calm and I am bubbly.
“He knows exactly what it is I need to do to get there. Even along the way I thought to change the goal because I was thinking this definition thing is so hard, but he makes me believe I can do it,” Moses shared about her personal trainer Peter Rattray.
Although her fiancé had told her she didn’t need to lose weight, he now loves her new body and is glad that she stuck to her guns.
“I achieved the weight loss because I didn’t think what was on the inside was showing on the outside and he said okay you can stop here… but now that my body is taking the form, he is super-excited, even more so than me,” said a smiling Moses. “He is so excited, he wants to even show it off, so he has stopped walking beside me and is now walking behind me because he says he wants to hear when other men are calling to me,” said Moses.
“I think the Observer should do it again and again and again; everybody should get a chance to experience it,” Moses said.
