Barnett nets 6 as Hydel maul Penwood 14-0
HYDEL High registered the biggest win of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup football season with a 14-0 mauling of the hapless Penwood High in their Group F encounter at Caymanas Field yesterday.
Steven Barnett netted six times to take his tally to nine goals in three games and propelled Hydel to sole leadership of the group with maximum nine points.
Calabar High are second on seven points after battling to a 1-1 draw with St Catherine High, who are third with five points. St Jago High got their first win of the season, beating Eltham High 3-1 in the Spanish Town derby.
Meanwhile, Denham Town High were held to a 2-2 draw by Tivoli Gardens High at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex yesterday and lost top spot in Group C to Innswood High, who blanked Edith Dalton James 2-0 at Chedwin Park.
Innswood High lead the group with maximum nine points ahead of Denham Town on seven with Tivoli Gardens edging to four points from three games.
St Mary’s College defeated Ardenne High 3-0 to join them on three points.
In the feature West Kingston derby played on the same ground shared by both schools, Tivoli Gardens went ahead courtesy of an Orlando Wade strike in the 11th minute. But Denham Town rallied and found the equaliser in the 17th minute when Tarrique Campbell turned in a freekick that hit the crossbar.
The yellow and blue-clad Denham Town then deservedly assumed the lead in the 30th minute with a superb strike from just outside the box by Tajay Cunningham. But just when it seemed the power of schoolboy football had shifted in West Kingston, Tivoli Gardens found the equaliser in the 70th minute when Daniel Green headed home.
Dave Clarke, the veteran head coach of Tivoli Gardens, was more satisfied with the result. “It’s more like a win to us because I think that Denham Town, man-to-man is a better team than us.
“We did two things, we cut out the number eight (Junior McGreggor) who is the main player and once you cut him out, we took charge of the game and should have actually won,” Clarke added.
However, Denham Town’s coach Errol Bennett was clearly the one left more disappointed with the result. “I am definitely disappointed. I think we lost the midfield in the latter part of the game and Tivoli took control and came up with a goal.
“This is the best side we have played so far and it showed up the weakness I have in my side and we will have to go back to the locker room and come back fresh Tuesday,” said Bennett.
In the rescheduled Group E encounter, Holy Trinity High clipped Trench Town High 1-0 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex and joined Wolmer’s Boys’ atop of the group with six points.
In the lone Group B match, Vauxhall High and Mona High played to a 0-0 result. It was the first point for both teams in a group led by Charlie Smith on nine points ahead of Excelsior High with four points.
