Back to Frome
FROME, Westmoreland — Premier League football returns to the Frome Sports Complex in Westmoreland for the first time in two years on Sunday afternoon, when newly promoted Reno FC host Humble Lion starting at 3:30 pm.
After putting in a creditable performance away to defending champions Montego Bay United on Monday night at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, Reno FC will hope for their first win in front of what is expected to be a massive turn out.
Reno FC were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2011-12 season, but the Westmoreland-based Savannah SC won promotion the next season filling the gap left by the three-time champions.
After a brilliant start, beating then defending champions Portmore United in the first game, Savannah beat Harbour View and Cavalier, but later lost 24 of their next 35 games and went straight back down to the Western Confederation Super League.
Reno FC’s goals are modest this season and one senior executive, Fitzroy Cooper, said a top six place is a reasonable expectation given they were unable to attract top quality players, due to the lack of funding.
On Monday night, mere hours after Montego Bay United dropped their threats to boycott the first three games of the season, Reno FC salvaged a good point from a 1-1 draw and raised hopes of winning their home opener.
Humble Lion also played out a 1-1 draw in their opening game, giving up a late equaliser to Tivoli FC on Sunday.
At the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Monday, Reno FC went behind after 25 minutes, but the dependable Craig Foster responded in the 53rd minute. He, however, later missed what could have been the winning goal.
Patrick Graham, who was appointed head coach at Reno two weeks ago, was happy for the point.
“This was a good game for us, we were out of the Premier League for three years and we are playing the defending champions,” he stressed.
“I believe we gave a good account of ourselves, the players did well and stuck to the game plan we had.”
MBU took the lead when Ladale Richie overlapped down the right flank, snapped up a weak clearance from the Reno defence and crossed it into the penalty area. The ball beat two MBU players, which rebounded to the lanky Rodney, who casually slotted it home past goalkeeper Chad Baker low to his left.
Allan Ottey should have doubled the score in time added on at the end of the first-half when he was served up a chance on a proverbial platter.
MBU hit Reno FC on a fast counter attack and with just one defender and Baker at their mercy, Omar Gordon got past the defender and passed the ball perfectly to Ottey who blasted the ball high over the cross bar.
The second half saw more attacking football, but only one goal and several glaring misses in front of goal.
Foster, who scored all five Reno goals in the two-way finals of the Western Confederation Super League, was in the right spot in the 53rd minute to react first to a ball that came off the inside of goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett’s left post, hitting it back past him to level the scores.
Five minutes later, a powerful shot from Gordon came back of Baker’s chest, but the Reno FC defence cleared it away in time.
Foster had the chance to give his team the lead in the 64th minute when he beat the MBU offside trap, but with only Barrett to beat, muffed the shot badly from just about 10 yards out.
MBU came at a tiring Reno FC hard late in the game and once again the ball fell to Ottey who wasted it, hammering a shot into the side netting from inside the six yards box after a series of quick passes had opened up the defence.
