Calabar defeat St Jago 3-1 for second win
Calabar High secured win number two in Group F of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup when they defeated St Jago High 3-1 at Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.
Brandon Webster gave Calabar the lead in the 39th minute and Jawahni Hinds doubled the lead three minutes later before Omar Walcott sealed the win in added time. St Jago captain Andrew Daley (66th) got the consolation goal in the hot-tempered affair which saw five players being shown the yellow card.
It was an even contest in the early period as both teams struggled to settle in the soggy conditions. Calabar were the first to settle with back-to-back shots at goal.
But St Jago responded promptly with a shot from Daley outside the 18-yard area, but he was denied by Andrew Thomas in goal.
Calabar eventually opened their account when a well taken free kick by captain Lenworth Reckford bubbled out of the hands of St Jago’s goalkeeper Vaughn Lawrence and Webster was on hand to head home.
The scored doubled three minutes later when the St Jago goalkeeper again failed to gather the ball cleanly and allowed Hinds to easily poke the ball into the goal.
St Jago stole the ascendancy in the second stanza as Calabar lost their industry in attack, which allowed Daley to slip by their defence to score.
But in St Jago’s effort to find the equaliser, they left their backdoor ajar for Walcott to put the icing on the cake.
Meanwhile, Hydel High blanked Eltham High 7-0 and St Catherine High got by Penwood High 4-2 in the other Group F games.
Meanwhile, Charlie Smith registered the biggest win of the season so far trouncing Cumberland High 11-0 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Bebeto McDonald netted four times taking his tally to five from two games. Shamar Pryce grabbed a brace as five more persons got on the scoresheet with one apiece.
The Jerome Waite-coached team now assume sole leadership of Group B with maximum six points ahead of Excelsior high with four points following their 2-0 win over Vauxhall High. On Saturday, Excelsior could only muster a 0-0 draw with Cumberland.
