Anchovy welcome Irwin to newly refurbished grounds
ANCHOVY, St James — Two rescheduled games will be played this afternoon as the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition continues after Saturday’s opening games.
Anchovy High will open their recently refurbished grounds with a home game against Irwin High who return to Zone A after playing in Zone B last season, while Holmwood Technical play away to Christiana High.
Both games were originally scheduled for Saturday, but were rescheduled for this afternoon.
Neither Anchovy nor Irwin managed a win last year. In the case of Anchovy, they lost all eight games in Zone A and in the process conceded 30 goals, while Irwin managed a point playing in Zone B.
Today’s winners will take the lead in Zone A after former champions St James High and last year’s Zone A winners Green Pond played out a 1-1 draw at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday.
Richard James gave the Theodore Whitmore-coached St James High the lead early in the game, but Peter Campbell responded by scoring the equaliser in the 34th minute.
The team had an extended half-time break after a power cut knocked out the floodlights.
Earlier, defending champions St Elizabeth Technical opened their season with a 9-0 trouncing of BB Coke with Jovoney Brown getting a hat-trick and Donjay Smith scoring two goals.
It was STETHS’ largest margin of victory since beating Balaclava High 11-0 in a first-round game in Santa Cruz last season.
