Woman held allegedly delivering contraband to convict Linton Berry
A St Catherine cashier, who was reportedly caught transporting contraband to a district constable who is serving a life sentence, had her bail extended until September 29.
Lorraine Lindsay of a Cumberland address in Portmore, St Catherine, had her bail extended last week when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on charges of conspiracy to communicate with a prisoner in a penal institution, conspiracy to introduce contraband into a penal institution, and breaches of the Customs Act.
Lindsay was held, reportedly, on her way to deliver a box of counterfeit cigarettes and four cheque books to Linton Berry in the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston. Berry is serving a life sentence in relation to the murder of his alleged lover.
On March 3, 2014, when Lindsay was taken off a bus along Constant Spring Road, St Andrew and detained by the police, Berry reportedly made several calls to her cellphone to find out what was causing her delay.
A carton of cigarettes that contained 10 small boxes of cigarettes and four cheque books with Berry’s name printed on the cheque leaves were reportedly found. A further search of her home reportedly turned up other documents relating to transactions she conducted on Berry’s behalf. A cheque for $16,649, written out to a supermarket, was also found, along with two cellphones that contained messages from Berry.
When cautioned, Lindsay said: “If mi did know say ah so much trouble mi wouldn’t do it cuz me naah get nutten fi du it. A prison me go and see him and a help him out. Mi stil guh buy im grocery and do im business for im.”
Lindsay was subsequently charged by Detective Corporal Kirk Roache.
On Tuesday, when the matter was mentioned, the court was informed that the data from the cellphones was still being analysed by the police Cybercrimes Unit. Lindsay’s bail was then extended.
