Ready to roll
The new season of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) gets underway today, but not all 12 teams will answer the call when the first whistle is blown in the first round of matches.
Up to press time today, there remained uncertainty whether Montego Bay United, the current champions, will honour their RSPL Monday Night fixture against newly-promoted former winners Reno FC at Catherine Hall in St James.
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) had called an emergency meeting of the Professional Football Association of Jamaica (PFAJ), the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA) and competing clubs on Friday to iron out issues surrounding the league and its governance.
The Sunday Observer understands that at the meeting, most parties were convinced that the matter would be resolved by late this month, but representatives from the Montego Bay club remained dissatisfied.
Montego Bay’s failure to show for the game could result in loss of points for that encounter, monetary fines, as well as other sanctions.
In the meantime, the match between Waterhouse FC and promoted Barbican FC, originally scheduled for this afternoon, has been postponed because the former, who are last season’s runners-up, have a total of five players unavailable due to Jamaica’s international assignment away to Canada on Tuesday.
That RSPL clash was scheduled to be part of a double-header at the National Stadium, which also included a feature encounter between Harbour View FC and Arnett Gardens FC.
Because of the postponement, the enticing Harbour View-Arnett Gardens game has been moved to the Harbour View Stadium, starting at 3:30 pm today. Fans can be prepared for top quality action between two former champions, who were both eliminated at the semi-final stage last season.
At the Juici Park in Clarendon, Sporting Central Academy are slated to ahost Boys Town FC in today’s 3:30 pm kick-off.
In a 4:00 pm start at the Bramwell Clarke Complex in Ewarton, St Catherine, the home team Rivoli United tackle Cavalier SC.
At the Effortville Community Centre, the Premier League’s other Clarendon-based representative Humble Lion FC entertain Tivoli Gardens FC in a game set to commence at 6:30 pm.
