Nosworthy returns to Reggae Boyz squad
Fit-again defender Nyron Nosworthy has been recalled to the Jamaica senior Reggae Boyz squad as the country prepares to battle fellow CONCACAF team Canada in an international friendly game at the BMO Field in Toronto in next Tuesday’s scheduled 6:30 pm (Jamaica time) kick-off.
The much-rated 33-year-old Bristol City central defender injured his Achilles heel during Jamaica’s failed qualifying campaign for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and missed a significant chunk of the matches in the final round.
Nosworthy’s return to the national set-up will be a boost to the Winfried Schaefer-led coaching staff as the Boyz engage in warm-up games ahead of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Championship to be hosted in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Local-based players are set to practise 3:00 pm today and the same time tomorrow at the Jamaica Football Federation Technical Centre on the University of the West Indies campus.
The delegation departs Jamaica on Sunday morning.
Canada also missed out on qualifying to the recent World Cup.
Jamaica’s next scheduled international friendly programme is away to Japan — a World Cup participant — on October 10 in Niigata.
The CFU Cup is slated for November 10-17, and the champions, along with Mexico, United States, the Central American champions and two teams to be determined from next year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup placing, will make up the six teams from CONCACAF to join the 10 South American (CONMEBOL) teams for the Copa Centenario in 2016 in the USA.
Squad — Andre Blake (Philadelphia Union), Ryan Thompson (Tampa Bay Rowdies), Nyron Nosworthy (Bristol City), Wes Morgan (Leicester City), Nicholy Finlayson (Waterhouse), Upston Edwards (Waterhouse), Alvas Powell (Portland Timbers), Kemar Lawrence (Harbour View), Keithy Simpson (Vaasan), Kenardo Forbes (Waterhouse), Omar Holness (University of North Carolina), Evan Taylor (Waterhouse), Je-Vaughn Watson (FC Dallas), Jermaine Anderson (Waterhouse), Darren Mattocks (Vancouver White Caps), Simon Dawkins (Derby County), Deshorn Brown (Colorado Rapids), Jamar Loza (Norwich City).
