Nelson bags four-timer at Caymanas Park
Two-time defending champion jockey Dane Nelson was once again the toast at Caymanas Park, riding four winners from as many mounts to close the gap on Dick Cardenas, who rode two winners on the nine-race programme yesterday.
Cardenas (68) now leads Nelson (66) by two winners in the race for the jockeys’ championship.
Nelson’s winners included the Spencer Chung-trained Typewriter, who as expected did enough after being dropped in class to win handily by three-quarters-of-a-length in the annual renewal of the Nigel B Nunes Memorial, an Open Allowance event for three year olds and upwards going over 1,820 metres.
Exotic Gold, with Dick Cardenas in the saddle was second ahead of Timeforarms (Jemar Jackson astride) with Miracle Star (O’Brien White up) completing the frame. This year’s Derby and St Leger winner Relampago, the mount of Jevvanne Erwin, was a disappointing last.
Owned by Robert Chung and WPV Chung and bred by Ham Stables, the five-year-old bag gelding by Western Classic-Docs’ Paladin posted a fast 1:53:3 minutes for the distance.
“I wasn’t worried about the race because I was confident in my horse (Typewriter) to get the job done. I just wanted him to get a patient ride as Fantabulous was scratched from the race, so I just allowed Exotic Gold to lead so that I have a pace to run at, turning for home I just asked him for everything and he responded well and we eventually won the race quiet easily.
“It feels good to ride four winners from four rides,” Nelson added in the winners’ enclosure.
Trainer Chung said that his charge is peaking at the right time.
“The time he ran was good although the track is fast, but I am happy with the victory. He is getting fitter each time at the back end of the year and he is peaking at the time leading up to the Superstakes,” Chung told the Jamaica Observer.
Typewriter broke well and was held in third position by Nelson behind Exotic Gold and Timeforarms going into the club house turn. As the five runners sorted themselves out, Exotic Gold continued to lead with Typewriter settled in second with Timeforarms in third approaching the home bend.
Turning for home on the outside some three lengths behind Exotic Gold, Nelson then urged his mount to go and Typewriter responded well and got up in time for an emphatic victory.
Nelson’s other winners were Gran Corazon in the second race for trainer Rowan Mathie over 1,600 metres, Rolex in the third race for trainer Joseph Durrant over 1,200 metres, and the Ryan Darby-trained Winesha in the fourth race over 1,100 metres. Cardenas’ winners were Crucial Appeal and Early Edition.
Meanwhile, the Dwight Chen-trained Come Dance With Me produced a gate-to-wire performance to dismantle a good field of two year olds in one of two co-features, the Rhoel Rhoden Memorial Trophy over 1,100 metres.
Ridden by Percy Williams Come Dance With Me (Blue Pepsi Lodge-Soca Dancer) was sent to the lead and that was that for her 11 rivals as she stopped the clock in 1:06:2 minutes. Ali Baba (Dick Cardenas up) was second and Kesteen (O’Brien White up) was third.
The other co-feature, the Advanced Integrated System Trophy was won by the fast-finishing Swift Gold (Ameth Robles astride) by a half length over The Real Draft (Jevvanne Erwin up) and Brilliant Ace under Robert Halledeen in 1:30:1 minutes for the 1,400-metre event.
