Back-to-school checklist
THE first day of school can be exciting or nervous for some children. Parents can also have anxiety, but being organised and having useful tips can assist in making this experience easier.
For those transitioning to new schools, parents should speak about the positive things that will happen upon them entering the new school. For example, there is the opportunity to be classmates with another child from their neighbourhood. Parents being very involved that first week of school might also be helpful for a smooth transition.
Establish a school-night routine
In preparation for starting school, parents should aim to get a good school-night routine. Before bed, clothes are prepared, school bags packed and a reasonable time for bed is established, so that the children get enough rest.
Organise school bag
School bags should be packed light and not weigh more than 10- 20 per cent of child’s body weight. Both shoulder straps must always be used, because if one strap is used this can lead to muscle strain. Ensure that heavier objects are placed in the centre of the school bag and have all school supplies organised in all compartments of the bag.
Sharp objects, such as pens and pencils, should be placed in a case.
Know your child’s food needs
It would be good to find out the food that is offered to your child at school. If your child has food allergies or should be on a special diet because of an illness, the teacher should be aware and it is advisable to pack appropriate lunches.
Encourage good hygiene
Good hygiene practice is necessary as this can prevent certain contagious illnesses. This includes washing hands or use of personal hand sanitisers, especially before and after eating.
Encourage extra-curricular activities
Encourage your child to get socially active. This can be done by enrolling in extra-curricular activities that are team oriented. Do not force them to do any activities. Let them try for a period and see if they like it.
Schedule time for homework
Homework should be organised and scheduled for a certain time to be completed before bedtime, so they can get enough rest. School work should be done in a quiet setting where distractions can be avoided and the child can have good concentration. Positive reinforcement and rewards for completing homework will be motivating for the child. Reduce screen time, that is television, computers, tablets, and phones time. Internet use should be supervised at all times.
Get A medical check-up done
Ensure your child gets a medical check-up and all vaccinations for the child’s age are obtained. Be organised, be careful and be ready for this upcoming term.
